Tom Holland revealed his “Onward” co-star and fellow actor within the Marvel Cinematic Universe Chris Pratt was a big source of support for him as Sony and Disney battled over the fate of the next “Spider-Man” film.
Because the two companies couldn’t come to an agreement on a new financing deal for the third film in the series that started with “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” Disney and Sony briefly split up over the summer– leaving Holland and Spidey outside of the MCU. Weeks later, they announced they had reached an agreement and Marvel Studios, along with its president, Kevin Feige, would produce the next movie.
Holland was stuck in the middle of the dispute, and it came at a time when he had to face press and fans at D23, Disney’s biannual convention.
“Everyone was really supportive, absolutely everyone,” Holland told Variety at the “Onward” premiere. “But, Chris and I were obviously standing backstage together before we were called out on stage [at D23] and I was telling him the news and he hadn’t heard it yet. He was like, ‘No, that’s not going to happen. That’s not going to happen. They’re going to figure it out. And if not, you’ll be great. You’ll be fine.'”
He finished by saying it’s “just really nice to have him in my corner because he’s someone I really look up to and someone that I really appreciate and I’m glad that we’re good buddies.”
The actor also went on to share his favorite Pixar film and why. “‘Coco’ is my favorite Pixar movie. My granny Tess is not too dissimilar to Mama Coco. So when I saw that, I felt really connected to her,” he said. “I met the young guy who was playing the lead [Anthony Gonzalez] throughout the press tour and we kept bumping into each other. He was so sweet and so excited to be in that movie. It was just really wonderful to see it blossom and do so well because I know that he was so excited to be there. It just was a really good feeling.”
